Und all das passiert mit einer Attitüde, die beständig den Status Quo mit einem Grinsen in Frage stellt. Feminismus ist passé? We don’t think so. «

und hier noch ein kleiner martialischer eintrag. "terminator: the sarah connor chronicles" ist nicht unbedingt meine lieblingsserie, auch wenn shirley manson von garbage als T-1001 mitspielt.

aber nylons kate williams lässt in der septemberausgabe kostümdesignerin amanda friedland zu wort kommen.

mit, like, ein paar der übertriebensten "ich bin ja sooo jugendlich" ausdrücken ever. it's a blast.

man denkt ja "sarah connor = unterleiberl", aber so einfach ist es nicht. und besonders die letzte antwort ist interessant für mich - vielleicht in nächster zeit einen schuhmacher in meinen bekanntenkreis aufnehmen?

• how did you get started in costume design?

• i was going to school for fashion and was moonlighting as a cigarette girl because it was the best way to get into clubs underage. one night i was in the bathroom and overheard someone talking about how she was having some sewing done for david bowie but wasn't happy about how it was turning out. so i walked up and said "hey, i sew!" she gave me her card, and the next day i called her and she hired me as an assistant.

• what is the most fun about doing costumes for terminator?

• the messaging is so great: we're talking about freedom fighters and renegades and bad-asses. dressing bad-asses is a blast.

• how do you develop the costumes?

• i keep archives of tear sheets of things that i like, and when i found out i was up for the job, i put together a 60 page presentation within three hours. then once i got it, i watched the pilot and saw how they were (...) trying to save the world without drawing too much attention to themselves (...). this is what really drives me, the psychology of figuring out what people are trying to say and what they're keeping inside.

• do you make most of the clothes or buy them?
• it's a mix of both. a lot of stuff we find at army and navy surplus stores, and we give it our own spin. we'll take camo pants and overdye them black and then cut them up and mae a jacket out of it. we get jungle boots that are 20$ a pop, and we'll take three pairs, cut them up and turn them into pole-climbers that go to the knee, so it's all rag-tag. a lot of the leather is cutom made, and amy glenn on our crew makes all of john connors t-shirts. we have some favourite designers we love to use off the rack as well: james perse, da-nang, diesel, and g-star is a big one - their whole aesthetic is really in line with our show. but a lot of stuff we just cut up and reassemble like it's armageddon 2027.
